The Eric Liddell Centre came about thanks to the vision of Christian people in Edinburgh who wanted to continue the work of the Church in a building that had become redundant.
A charity was set up and important new work in, for and by the local community began in earnest more that 25 years ago. The need to preserve this listed building meant that a brilliant solution had to be found which would also breathe new life into the old structure. The audacious building of a four storey block inside the old walls was just the beginning.
Now, inspired by the example of the great Olympian and Christian humanitarian Eric Liddell who lived and worshipped locally, caring work is carried out in a number of vital areas. Some of this work is paid for by the local authority and grants from Trusts, but it is all underpinned by an army of volunteers and much charitable giving by people who care.
The Centre aims to offer the highest quality of community facilities for the local population – including a top-rate café – and also provides project accommodation for other charities.
A visit to the Eric Liddell Centre will show that all involved are committed to the conservation and enhancement of the listed property and its environment. Preserved mainly because of the quality and quantity of the stained glass, the windows have never in all of their history been seen to better effect than from the various levels of walkways now available to everyone during their visit.
If you are inspired by our website and the photographs of the windows, then why not consider helping us with our work?
A gift from you will be put towards
· The provision of care for the aged, people with disability, young people and children
· The advancement of education
· The advancement of health
· The advancement of religion
· The advancement of civic responsibility or community development
· The advancement of amateur sports
· The advancement of arts, culture and heritage
Now, doesn’t that seem worthwhile?
The solid stones of the original building are a superb framework for the colourful windows that adorn the place. Each window light contains and tells a story.
The pictures often tell of a particular biblical event and remind us of the teachings that underpin and are woven into the fabric of our society.
Most have been given by individuals, families or community groups to remember the lives of men and women who, like us all, are both ordinary and extraordinary. We may never know the full glory of the story, but we, too, can join with all who have been associated with this place. We, too, can leave our mark.
Please consider joining us in our work.
Send us a donation, consider leaving us something in your will, come in often (if you live locally) and use our café or other facilities, become a volunteer… There’s no end of ways in which you can become part of the fabric of this wonderful building and one of the caring community that works within it.
